Chain & Spoke

Des Moines’ only Coffee Shop and Cyclery

Originally constructed in 1925 to house the Iowa Lithographic Co., the building had remained vacant for years but in early April, Jeff Hoobin brought his vision to life by opening a unique experience.

The newly renovated building at 515 28th St. in Des Moines is adorned with vibrant stripes in blue, red, black, yellow, and green. These colors hold a special significance, as they represent the world cycling championship. They serve as a clue to the unique establishment that now occupies the historic former print shop: Chain & Spoke, Des Moines' first combined bike and coffee shop.

With Chain & Spoke, Hoobin combines his love for cycling, high-quality coffee, and unique architecture. He wanted the menu to reflect the caliber of bikes offered and to complement the ambiance of the space. The coffee selection focuses on enhancing the classics, such as cold brews and espresso, while also featuring a signature drink that changes with each season.
